Dr. Jin-Soo Kim, our Founder, had developed and advanced both mitochondrial DNA targeting cytosine base editors (CBEs) and adenine base editors (ABEs) since 2021. Based on his innovative achievements in gene editing technologies, Edgene is developing and advancing mitochondrial genome editing platforms and developing gene therapeutics to correct pathogenic mutations of mitochondrial genes.

Due to limitation of CRISPR system to apply mitochondrial DNA base editing, we’re using CRISPR free base editing systems. Transcription activation-like effector (TALE) or zinc finger protein (ZFP) are used as DNA-binding domain and adenine or cytosine deaminase are applied as effector domain for mitochondrial adenine (mtABEs) or cytosine base editors (mtCBEs), respectively.
